I think you get more out of the show with very little knowledge of what it's about. Let's just say there are heavy metaphysical themes, questions of the nature of reality, explorations of near death experiences, and confrontations with fate. It's a SLOW burn though, so make sure you get at least 2-3 episodes in before you really judge it.

Black Mirror - Netflix

British show and now produced by Netflix, Black Mirror is what to watch when you want a peek into our world just slightly into the future and with a scarier obsession with technology. Each episode is a stand-alone vignette, making it easy to pick up and put down at will. The first two seasons are very dark, and the third is slightly tempered for a wider American audience with a few really twisted storylines left in for those who like to be depressed about the future

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate - Nintendo 3DS

Even though the most adamant players have moved onto Monster Hunter Generations, I've been playing Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate (MH4U) for the Nintendo 3DS for the better part of 2016.


If you're new to the Monster Hunter formula, the name really says it all. You are a "hunter" in a world inhabited by very large, mostly dinosaur-like creatures known as "monsters." You are given missions (or "quests") that generally entail going after one or more of these creatures. If you fall in battle three times, you lose. If you exceed the quest time limit, you lose. But if you manage to eke out a victory, you're on top of the world.

Shameless - Showtime

The series is based on a British show of the same name, and follows the Gallagher clan-- a family of six kids with an alcoholic father and a bipolar mother.  It falls somewhere between comedy and drama-- the situations are beyond comical, but the characters are grounded in a reality that lies somewhere between dysfunctional and just plain sad.
